Happy Birthday to DVF’s Wrap Dress!!!! Now, while I don’t know the exact date of creation for this timeless classic, I do know that it turns 40 one of these days coming up. There isn’t a style of dress, or clothes for that matter, that I can think of that is more relevant and with this much history than The Wrap Dress. 40 years ago when DVF created this style, she was a young designer just starting out and recently married-to a prince- and wanted to be her own woman whom people saw as a business woman not married to a prince for his money. Boy did she accomplish that goal! Because of her love the the female form and her draping skills, she gave birth to an idea that has forever changed fashion. Born in 1974, the Wrap dress rose to popularity in cult like fashion and has been worn on everyone from secretaries to secretaries of state and all walks of life in between. As a result, it was inducted into the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Over the years, there have been subtle tweaks and changes to the iconic style, but it still remains, the quintessential dress for many women. It flatters almost every body type and shape, can be worn to work, dinner, a casual wedding, or on vacation. It’s still affordable for most price points and comes in tons of colors and prints, my personal favorite is either solid black or navy with long sleeves. Side note: I love vintage shopping. Since I was 16, it has been my vintage shopping goal to find an original wrap dress from 1974. I vowed to stop vintage shopping once I do. They are a rare vintage find, and I am still looking.
Then and now, this dress is a hit! Happy Birthday Wrap Dress.
